A significant zinc mining operation in North Quuensland has the largest tailings re-treatment operation in Australia. This facility ranks among the top 15 global zinc producers, with an annual zinc production of 118,108 metric tonnes in FY2022.
Originally the site was using multiple large submersible pumps placed onto a purpose built pontoon, these production “slurry winning” pumps were being fed zinc tailings slurry by hydro mining water blast cannons.
Production was continually being disrupted because pumps were failing prematurely mostly due to the high load demands and the challenging
conditions presented by the very abrasive zinc tailings and the various forms of debris that had accumulated in the tailings over time.
Goodwin Submersible Pumps Australia, in Brisbane received an urgent request top visit the site for the purpose of carrying out an application survey and offer a possible pumping solution which would see the replacement of the existing slurry winning submersible pumps on the pontoon. The challenge was to achieve an increase in production and a decrease in maintenance and breakdown costs.
It became evident during the survey that a large capacity hard iron slurry pump would be required to meet the duty and demands of the zinc hydromining tailings reclamation project. Goodwin selected the 200ANZE model heavy duty slurry pump for the task. The 200ANZE can deliver up to 800m3/h with a shut off head of 40 meters. The 200ANZE pump comes as standard with Tungsten Carbide coated wet-end components for a longer life. Because of the urgent nature, two pumps were ordered and expedited to site and installed on to the pontoon as quickly as possible.

The addition of the two 200ANZE “slurry winning” pumps instantly resulted in production improvements including delivery of a higher density slurry and higher flow rates while also significantly better reliability than the operator was previously experiencing.
Because of the successful performance that was achieved with the first two pumps the operator soon added three more 200ANZE pumps bringing the total to five for the zinc tailings retreatment.
